Per the report, Diggs sees himself as a legit No. 2 option for a contender at this stage of his career, which is a pretty honest self-assessment for a 4-time Pro Bowler who's no longer the alpha on anyone's depth chart. The list of teams doing homework reportedly includes Washington, and that one has extra juice because of Diggs' hometown ties to the DMV area.
It's worth remembering how quick this turn has been. Diggs signed that Patriots deal in free agency last year as a bounce-back vet after his run with the Bills, and the contract was structured so New England had an easy out after one season — reportedly saving them real cap room by moving on before June 1. That's exactly what happened, and now he's back on the open market picking through fits instead of locking in a long-term home.
The Washington angle is the juiciest part of this. A No. 2 receiver with Diggs' résumé slotting in as insurance and a security blanket for a young quarterback is the kind of low-cost, high-signal move contenders make in late July when camps are about to kick off and rosters are getting finalized.
