And now the front office is putting its GM's whole season under the microscope. On Sunday night, the org's account announced it was doing a formal season review of general manager Jace Humberson ahead of this week's owners meeting, and it wants fans to submit the questions.
That's not a small ask. Humberson runs the front office for an org that's had real highs this year, including 1st-place finishes at Elite Playoffs 4 and Major 3 Atlanta, plus a 3rd-place run at Major 4 Paris in June. Those results are the reason the Bush got taken seriously as a legitimate Challengers program instead of just a Barstool bit with a roster attached.
But the timing of this review isn't a coincidence. Telluride Bush Gaming just came off a brutal run at Challengers Finals in Las Vegas, where they dropped Winners Round 1 in a 0-3 sweep to defending champs OMiT before clawing back through the Losers Bracket, only to ultimately come up short of a spot in the Esports World Cup. Jersey Jerry didn't hide his frustration afterward, calling the performance "totally unacceptable" and saying the team played with "no heart" and "0 emotion."
The fallout went beyond one bad tournament. Dave Portnoy said on Wake Up Barstool that the org is "real close to getting shut down," and co-host Brandon Walker publicly floated buying the Bush outright. That's the backdrop for an owners meeting that was already going to be about budget and direction — now it's also about whether the guy running the front office kept his job through it.
Throwing in a throwback to Humberson's original hiring interview from last September is a pointed touch. It's the org reminding everyone how this started right before deciding what happens next, and it puts the whole arc — from a first-time hire to a GM whose year is getting graded in public — in one frame.
