Charbonnet tore his ACL against the 49ers back in the playoffs and had surgery on it in February, so this was never going to be a quick turnaround. ACL recoveries typically run 9 to 12 months, which puts a realistic best-case return somewhere around Thanksgiving or later. Nobody in Seattle has been shy about that reality, but until now the team hadn't put much specificity to it at all.
That's about as vague as an injury update gets, and that's the point. Macdonald isn't hiding anything, he's just being honest that knee recoveries don't run on a press conference schedule. "He's going through it, hitting his hurdles and we're rolling," is coach-speak for good, but not done yet.
The complicating factor is that Seattle doesn't actually look desperate for him. The Seahawks used their 2026 first-round pick, No. 32 overall, on Notre Dame's Jadarian Price, and by all accounts of training camp he's been exactly what they hoped. Reports out of Renton have Price's grip on the RB1 job getting tighter by the week, which is not the typical rookie-running-back arc.
That's what makes the fantasy conversation so messy. Even once Charbonnet is fully healthy, there's no guarantee he walks right back into a clean workload — Price will have banked real game reps by then.
The clip has Nate Tice predicting Charbonnet's eventual return still leads to a frustrating carry-split with Price rather than a clean handoff back to full-time duty.
So the Seahawks backfield is stuck in a holding pattern that could last well into the fall. Price gets the reps now, Charbonnet chases hurdles with no finish line attached, and even when he clears them, the touches he's chasing might not be waiting for him the way they once were.
