Surviving Barstool Season 5 Episode 8: The Boys

By JR·5 min read

TLDR: Six players, one vote, and the whole house agreed on the name by lunchtime: Brandon Walker. So Brandon stopped going to rooms. He sat in his own with the door open, let the other five come to him one at a time, and turned the easy vote into the seventh member of the jury — Tommy Smokes, blindsided 4-2 by the men he had spent the season saying he would go to the end with.

Episode 8 opens where episode 7 stopped: with Dana Beers working out what the whisper in his ear was for. He says it in one line — his paranoia meter is going to Neptune — and Brandon Walker confirms the other half of it at the table, that he and Nicky Smokes had looked each other in the eye and written each other's names on purpose.

Then Marty Mush spends the one card nobody had played. He pulls Dana aside, makes him swear on it, and tells him Rone has had a hidden immunity idol since episode 1 — the secret Rone handed him in episode 3 to buy his loyalty, and the one thing about this season Rone still believes is his alone. The show subtitles the whole exchange. Dana's answer is "we gotta whack Rone," and his next question is whether they can flush it first.

Immunity was a maze, five totems — Brady 4, Emergency Press Conference Dave, Tea by the Sea Dave, Dog Dad Dave and Pizza Dave — each carried back on a pedestal small enough that anybody with a free hand could swat it off, and then a vertical slide puzzle Jeff introduced with 99% certainty that it had never been done in any reality competition anywhere. Rone was first back and first swatting, Marty grabbed the wrong colour, and Tommy Smokes — who owns the same slide puzzle at home — unlocked early and then sat and read it rather than start.

Glenny Balls called for a check and was not right, which is the whole margin of the episode: seconds later Dana called his own and had it. Immunity, the top five, and a necklace Jeff pointedly said he did not have to keep — "safe as long as you keep it. Could give it up. I'll ask you again about that later." He asked at council, Dana said no, and that is what made him the one man at the vote whose name could not be written down.

The plan was Brandon and had been since the challenge ended — "it's already decided, we're going Brandon, there's no reason to muck it up." His counter was to stop arguing: if he showed the room he was scared it would return the serve, so he sat in his studio with the door open and let everybody walk in. Then he called the sequence into the camera before it happened — Rone next, then Dana, Marty maybe before Dana, Glenny Balls not at all — and asked the edit for a check mark each time he got one right.

He got all three. Rone came in and said it was Tommy, 100%. Marty came in, promised Tommy, and showed him the idol he faked an ankle for in episode 5 as the collateral on it. Dana came in and confirmed it in four words. Glenny never came. What Brandon sold them is the arithmetic Tommy had been selling from the other side all afternoon: Marty and Dana are both carrying idols, the final five belongs to them, and it has to be one of them or it is one of us. Tommy wanted that flip to land on Marty. It landed on Tommy.

The council in front of it plays like a set-up written by somebody who already knew: the jury walked in wearing Dana Grim Reaper shirts, Brandon worked the room about a pregnant wife and four kids, and Jeff went down the line asking who would like to be blindsided. Glenny said he would love it. Tommy — a Survivor fan who has spent the season saying he wanted the shot of pulling an idol out of his pocket — gave the sensible answer: you like a cool death in a movie, you would rather it did not happen to you.

Rone voted first, Marty last, and three of the six cards are legible on the tape. Brandon holds up TOMMY and dedicates it to his son. Tommy holds up BRANDON and apologises for it — he would have loved to break up Marty and Dana and their idols, but he wanted the council down to five and to figure it out from there. Marty holds up BRANDON as well, talking himself into it as he writes: "either they're voting me, and now I'm writing Brandon's name down." Jeff read three Tommy, two Brandon, said one vote left and declared, which is only possible if the last card is Tommy's. 4-2.

Every room in the house spent the afternoon agreeing on Brandon Walker, so Brandon stopped walking into rooms. He sat in his own with the door open and let the other five come to him, told each of them the vote had to be Tommy because it could not be Brandon, and predicted on camera which three would show up and in what order — Rone, then Marty, then Dana, with Glenny Balls not coming at all. All three came, in that order. Tommy Smokes went to the jury as the seventh member on the blindside he had spent tribal council saying he did not want, from the three men he had told the room he would go to the end with.

Tommy's exit is the angriest thing anybody has said this season and it is aimed at the people rather than the play: he gets it as gameplay, he says, but he was ready to go to the end with Marty and Rone on a final-three deal made outside the game, and he does not expect to look at them the same way again. Walking out of the ring one player tells another he voted for the wrong person, and Brandon is already on Marty: "I saved you twice."

The next morning Tommy wrote the part the tape cannot carry — he played too soft, came in with too many real friends and chose them over $250,000, and made moves with his heart that he then justified as strategy in confessionals. He also settled the count on this page without meaning to: four friends of about 10 years blindsided him, which is exactly how many cards had to carry his name. Nicky Smokes, voted out one episode earlier, answered from the jury bench — Smokes blood runs thicker than New York water, and maybe if they had been friends for 10 years he would still be in the game.

The final five is Brandon Walker, Dana Beers, Marty Mush, Rone and Glenny Balls, and all three idols are still in pockets — Rone's from episode 1, Dana's from episode 3, Marty's from episode 5, none of them ever played. Two of those three men now know about the third one, and the third does not know they know.

That is the state of the game going into episode 9. The alliance that has run every vote since the swap has one outsider left in Brandon Walker before it has to eat itself, Dana has already said out loud which of them he wants gone, and the man he named is the only one holding a counter he does not yet know he needs.
