Luis Romo's 50th-minute strike off a Kim Seung-gyu spill was the difference as Mexico beat South Korea 1-0 and locked up Group A.

Mexico 1, South Korea 0. Tight, ugly, decided by one moment: Kim Seung-gyu got tangled trying to claim a cross, the ball fell loose, and Luis Romo hammered it home five minutes into the second half. That was the night.

El Tri didn't dazzle, they just refused to crack. Raul Rangel had a quiet night behind a back four of Sanchez, Alvarez, Vasquez and Gallardo, and the midfield trio of Lira, Romo and Gutierrez bossed the tempo without ever fully ripping Korea open. The goal was opportunism more than craft — Romo reading the chaos in the box quicker than anyone in white.

Two matches, two clean sheets, six points. Mexico are through to the Round of 32 and have officially clinched Group A. Considering the talk before this tournament about whether this side could even get out of the group, locking it down on matchday 2 is a serious statement, even if the football itself was workmanlike rather than spectacular.

South Korea were fine. That's the frustrating part. Lee Kang-in pulled the strings, Son led the line, and the back three of H. Lee, Mi. Kim and G. Lee handled most of what Mexico threw at them. Then their goalkeeper coughed up the only goal of the match and that was the ball game. Lee Kang-in was booked in the 4th minute and Paik Seung-ho followed in the 76th — both will need to be careful in the finale.

Hwang Hee-chan and Oh Hyeon-gyu came on at 57 chasing an equalizer that never arrived, despite a flurry of late pressure. Korea sit on 3 points from a win and a loss with a matchday left. They're not out — second place is still very much in their hands — but the margin for error just disappeared.

Markets had Mexico around 47% on Polymarket pre-kick with the draw at 30% — a clear favorite but nothing close to a lock. The actual match looked exactly like that price: Mexico the better side, never comfortable, decided by one mistake. Fair result, fair number.

The group board has Mexico at 98% to win Group A and effectively 100% to reach the Round of 32. Korea's path to the knockouts now runs through matchday 3 — win and they're almost certainly through, slip up and the math gets ugly fast. Mexico, meanwhile, can rest legs and start thinking about a Round of 32 opponent.
