Angels front office shakeup fuels catcher trade buzz

The Angels have never really solved catcher long-term, and now it sounds like the front office wants to go get another one before the deadline. MLB Trade Rumors reported the Halos are hoping to add a young backstop, a fresh wrinkle to a rebuild that's already been messy this summer.

This isn't coming from the same regime that's been running things. Perry Minasian got fired last month, and longtime Cardinals president John Mozeliak is now steering the ship on an interim basis. New boss, new priorities, and apparently catcher depth is near the top of the list.

The obvious wrinkle here is Logan O'Hoppe, the guy the Angels already got in a controllable-prospect swap with Philadelphia back at the 2022 deadline, sending Brandon Marsh the other way. That deal looked great for a stretch, O'Hoppe hit 20 homers with a.244/.303/.409 line in 2024, but his production has slipped since, and this year he's slashing.235/.306/.346. He's only 26 and controlled through 2028, which is exactly the kind of asset a rebuilding club can flip for a bigger return.

That's part of what makes this so interesting. The Angels aren't just shopping for a catcher to plug a hole, they might be doing it while simultaneously fielding calls on their current one. Reports have floated the Yankees as a team eyeing O'Hoppe as a fallback option if their top targets fall through, and the Angels could use his recent hot streak to boost his stock as a trade chip later in the summer.

On the incoming side, names like Cubs prospect Owen Ayers have surfaced as fits, since Chicago is hunting starting pitching and the Angels have arms to dangle, including Reid Detmers. With a new GM cleaning house and multiple directions this could go, catcher is shaping up to be one of the more fluid storylines heading into Aug. 3.
