The Angels bullpen has been in flux all summer, and the next domino is a first-timer. According to MLBTradeRumors, Los Angeles is expected to promote right-hander Luke Murphy, giving the Nashville native and Vanderbilt product his first MLB call-up.
Murphy isn't some random depth arm getting a cup of coffee. The Angels took him in the 4th round back in 2021, and he's spent this season shoving at Double-A Rocket City -- 38 innings, a 0.71 ERA across 34 appearances, a 32% strikeout rate against just a 7% walk rate, and 18-of-20 in save chances. That's not a small sample fluke, that's a guy forcing the issue.
The timing lines up too. The Angels shipped Chase Silseth to Texas recently, which cracked open a bullpen spot that needed filling. With the trade deadline bearing down, Los Angeles is also reportedly weighing deals for pending free agents Kirby Yates and Brent Suter, while sorting out where other young arms like Ryan Zeferjahn, Samy Natera Jr. and Jose Fermin fit into the picture.
None of that is a coincidence -- this is a bullpen mid-teardown, and Murphy's mid-90s fastball and video-game strikeout-to-walk numbers make him an easy guy to plug in while the front office figures out who's sticking around past the deadline. The Angels were off on July 30, with an official announcement reportedly coming the next day.
For a rebuilding-ish Angels club still trying to figure out its identity around Mike Trout, call-ups like this are where the actual scouting report gets written. Murphy gets a shot to show the mid-90s heat and elite Double-A peripherals translate, and if he does, he's suddenly part of the answer for a bullpen that's about to look very different by the time August rolls around.
