The Athletics have outrighted infielder Jonathan Ornelas to Triple-A Las Vegas, ending a short-lived big league stint that started with a lot of roster shuffling and ended without much to show for it. Ornelas was designated for assignment earlier this week when Zack Gelof returned from a knee laceration, and Oakland went ahead and cleared him off the 40-man entirely rather than keep the DFA clock running.
It's a procedural move on paper, but it says something about where the Athletics' infield picture stands down the stretch. Ornelas got the call up from Vegas, made 4 starts, split mostly between second base and one game in left field, and went 2-for-12 with a walk and 7 strikeouts across 13 plate appearances. Not exactly the kind of audition that forces a team's hand.
The bigger story is what this outright means for Ornelas himself. It's the second career outright of his career, which under MLB rules gives him the right to elect free agency instead of reporting to Triple-A. He's bounced around plenty already, drafted in the 3rd round back in 2018 by the Rangers, debuting in the majors with Texas in 2023, getting his taste with the Braves last season, and even opting out of a minor league deal with the Yankees back in July before landing in Oakland.
That journeyman path is part of why this feels like a footnote rather than a shakeup. Ornelas is still a career.200 hitter in the big leagues with zero home runs, even though he's put together a legit Triple-A season at.310/.378/.505 with 11 homers in roughly 300 at-bats. The bat plays in the minors, it just hasn't translated when the lights get bigger.
With Gelof back and healthy, Oakland's infield depth chart tightens up, and Ornelas now has a decision to make: elect free agency and try to find another org willing to give him another look, or stick around in the Athletics' system if he clears and accept the assignment back to Las Vegas. Given how thin the A's have been at second and third all year, don't be shocked if he ends up right back in that Vegas clubhouse before long.
