MLB Trade Rumors broke the news that the Athletics have agreed to a minor league contract with Jonathan Ornelas, a move that barely registers on the transaction ticker but says plenty about how teams stock up this time of year.

The Rangers took him in the 3rd round of the 2018 draft out of a Glendale, Arizona high school, and he worked his way up through Texas's system before debuting in the majors in August 2023. Over parts of 3 seasons he bounced up and down between Triple-A and the big leagues as a utility infielder, capable of playing short, third and second without ever locking down an everyday job.
The Rangers eventually moved on, and Ornelas landed with the Braves for a brief 2-game cameo before signing with the Yankees on a minor league deal. He was hitting well at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre before reportedly opting out of that deal, which opened the door for Oakland to swoop in.
For an A's team that's still figuring out its long-term identity in Sacramento, this is exactly the kind of low-cost, low-risk add that makes sense in late July. Rosters get thin at the deadline as contenders raid the minors for pieces, and clubs like Oakland use that churn to pick up depth infielders who can be a phone call away if injuries hit. It's not a splash, but it's a real body who's had big league at-bats and can plug in at multiple spots.
Nobody's projecting Ornelas as a difference-maker — his bat has never quite caught up to his glove and instincts in the field. But the value here is optionality. If he rakes at Triple-A like he reportedly did in the Yankees' system, the A's have another name to call up when the roster inevitably needs a fill-in during the stretch run.
