The Yak Gauntlet is the show's mascot bracket bit, and Thursday it finally had a winner. Purdue Pete — the construction-helmeted Boilermaker who has been getting his face redesigned every few years to less and less acclaim — took the EA Sports College crown over the rest of the field. Not the answer most people would've predicted, but if you've watched a Pete sideline cam in West Lafayette, you knew he had the chaos energy for a Gauntlet.

The road to the crown was not exactly clean. Big Cat, who was repping a Texas Tech mascot called Jeffrey through the bracket, bailed on his own guy partway through the run — abandoning Jeffrey to fend for himself in the gauntlet. It's the kind of mid-bit defection that only happens on this show, where the bit is half the point and committing to it is optional.

Around the actual competition, the studio fell apart in the way Yak studios tend to fall apart. Cast members kept getting wedged inside an inflatable crown-and-D logo prop. Chef Donny got stuck. Kody tried the inflatable ride solo and ate it. Matt Henkel, self-described average guy, split the D. By the end the floor was just bodies and foam.

The other through-line of the episode was Greg's sandwich. Greg had tweeted out a photo of a homemade sandwich with onions and banana peppers a day earlier with a humble brag that it 'came out good,' and the Yak desk pulled it up on screen and just teed off on it. By Thursday it had been rebranded as 'the infamous sandwich,' which is how Barstool inside jokes calcify in real time.

So that's the Thursday Yak: a real mascot bracket with a real winner buried inside an avalanche of inflatable prop wipeouts and a sandwich roast. Purdue Pete gets the trophy, Jeffrey from Texas Tech gets abandoned, Greg gets cooked, and the office cream machine quietly hit its one-year anniversary in the background. Pretty normal day until somebody got stuck in a D.
