Training camp is supposed to be the fun part of the calendar, all optimism and depth-chart battles before anything actually counts. For the Saints, that vibe got wrecked fast. Bryan Bresee went down last week in a non-contact drill, and on Sunday head coach Kellen Moore confirmed the worst: torn ACL, season-ending surgery, done before Week 1 even kicks off.
Adam Schefter had the news locked down, and it's about as unambiguous as injury reports get. No hedging, no 'week-to-week' language, just a coach telling reporters his starting defensive tackle is having season-ending surgery. That's a gut punch for a Saints defense that was counting on Bresee as a building block up front, not a rehab project.
This isn't new territory for Bresee, unfortunately. He tore his left ACL at Clemson back in 2021 and still bounced back well enough for New Orleans to take him 29th overall in the 2023 draft. He started all 15 games he played last season, racking up 37 tackles, 2.5 sacks, 5 tackles for loss and a forced fumble — the kind of quietly productive interior line role that doesn't show up on highlight reels but shows up on Sundays when the run game gets stuffed.
The Saints had already signaled they viewed Bresee as part of the long-term plan, reportedly picking up his fifth-year option to keep him under team control beyond his rookie deal. Now that long-term outlook comes with an asterisk: a second major knee surgery before he's even hit his mid-20s, and a full year of reps he simply won't get back.
For a rebuilding Saints roster already dealing with plenty of question marks, losing a first-round D-lineman for the year before camp wraps is the last thing Kellen Moore needed. Someone else on the depth chart just got handed a much bigger role than they were expecting, and New Orleans' interior pass rush and run defense will have to find answers without the guy they drafted to be the answer.
