Bryan Bresee's season ends before it even starts

Saints head coach Kellen Moore confirmed the news reporters had been bracing for: Bryan Bresee tore his ACL and is done for the season. Adam Schefter broke it, and it's about as clean-cut and brutal as injury news gets — no ambiguity, no second opinion pending, just surgery and a long road back.

What makes it sting more is how it happened. Bresee went down during the Saints' very first training camp practice, and by all accounts it wasn't even a violent play. Teammate Davon Godchaux called it 'a freak accident,' explaining Bresee was just working a pass-rush move when his knee buckled — no collision, no pile, nothing you can point to and say that's what did it.

This isn't new territory for Bresee, unfortunately. He tore the same knee back at Clemson in 2021, so this marks the second ACL tear of his career. That history doesn't make the recovery any shorter, but it does mean he's been through this rehab grind before, and the Saints medical staff has a track record to lean on.

The football fallout is real. Bresee was New Orleans' first-round pick back in 2023 and had racked up 14.5 sacks and 26 career starts, including 15 last season as a full-time starter on the interior. The Saints had just picked up his fifth-year option for 2027 at $13.9 million, a clear signal he was supposed to be a foundational piece up front for years to come. Now that timeline gets a gap year stapled onto it.

New Orleans isn't going to replace that kind of production with one guy. Reports out of camp point to a committee approach — Nathan Shepherd and second-year lineman Vernon Broughton stepping into first-team reps, with John Ridgeway III, Christen Miller and Khristian Boyd all expected to rotate in depending on the situation. Defensive end Chase Young summed up the vibe bluntly: the whole interior line needs to step up now that its best player is out.

It's a tough break for a Saints defense that was counting on Bresee as a building block, and it's a reminder of how fast a promising camp can turn on one non-contact rep. He'll be back for 2027 on a contract that already says the front office believes in him — for now, New Orleans just has to figure out how to survive without him for a full year.
