This is Ferguson's third straight season getting traded at the deadline, which tells you something about how teams view him: a useful, affordable arm that gets flipped once a contender needs bullpen depth. He signed a $4.5 million deal with Cincinnati last December, but a right oblique strain delayed his season and limited him to 26 appearances before he got moved again. He posted a 3.59 ERA across 52 2/3 innings for the Reds, working more as a pitch-to-contact lefty these days than the strikeout arm he was during his Dodgers, Yankees and Astros stops.

Nobody's pretending this vaults the Cardinals into October. St. Louis sat 4 games back of a wild card spot with just a 6.6% playoff probability at the time of the deal, and Ferguson is a pure rental — he hits free agency again this winter.
