Cardinals stand at a fork ahead of the deadline

The Cardinals are 51-48 and somehow still holding the National League's final Wild Card spot heading into an August 3 deadline, but the margin for error is basically nonexistent. Five teams sit within 3 games of that spot, and St. Louis just dropped 3 straight. That's the kind of stretch that usually forces a front office's hand one way or the other.

Except this front office doesn't seem interested in picking a lane. MLB Trade Rumors dropped its full deadline outlook on the Cardinals, laying out a club that's trying to have it both ways: stay in the race while still quietly restocking the system.

President of baseball ops Chaim Bloom has made clear the club won't stray far from its long-term rebuild plan even while flirting with contention, and that shows in the names floating around. Dustin May, owed $12MM this year and a pending free agent, is the obvious rental to move if St. Louis fades. JoJo Romero was also seen as a trade chip before an appendicitis diagnosis complicated that math. On the controllable side, Lars Nootbaar and Nolan Gorman are both being mentioned as players who could get dangled even though they're not pure rentals — a sign the Cardinals are willing to sell short-term value for long-term upside no matter how the standings shake out.

It's not a pure teardown, though. If the Cardinals are still hanging around the Wild Card picture as the deadline nears, the expectation is they'd buy — just not aggressively. Left-handed relief is the glaring hole, with the bullpen still shaky despite recent shuffling, and that's the kind of cheap, low-cost addition a half-buyer can make without mortgaging anything.

So the picture MLBTR paints is a club walking both sides of the line at once: shop the pending free agents, listen on a couple of controllable names, and maybe add bullpen depth if the Wild Card race stays close. The Cardinals have a manageable schedule against the Angels, Reds, Cubs and Blue Jays before the deadline hits, which gives them a real chance to settle the buyer-or-seller question on the field before they're forced to make it in a front office.
