Cubs torch Framber Valdez, turn Wrigley into a party

The Cubs had every reason to be deflated walking into this one. Detroit had just taken the series opener 8-6 in 10 innings behind two Dillon Dingler home runs, the kind of gut-punch loss that can bleed into the next game. Instead, Chicago came out swinging from the first pitch against Framber Valdez, who entered with a 5-6 record and a 4.10 ERA, and never let the Tigers starter find his footing.

That early lead only snowballed. By the middle innings Wrigley was rocking, and the scoreboard had ballooned into a laugher that had the home crowd on its feet. Cubs hitters entered the series having managed just 4-for-32 against Valdez in their careers, and this was the night they made up for it in one sitting.

Detroit did get one moment of dignity back before it was over. Dillon Dingler, fresh off his two-homer heroics from the night before, put a ball over the fence again in the 9th inning, a solo shot to trim the final margin in a game that ended 11-2. It didn't change the outcome, but it did cash a very specific prop bet for at least one Twitter account watching closely.
