Phillies circling Blue Jays outfielders before the deadline

The Phillies have a shopping list this deadline, and according to Jon Heyman, Toronto's Daulton Varsho is on it. Philadelphia is looking to add pieces at three different spots before rosters lock in, and Varsho fits the outfield need about as cleanly as anyone on the board.

Varsho isn't a household name outside Toronto, but he's exactly the kind of player contenders chase in July. He's a left-handed bat playing in a walk year, hitting.247/.308/.383 with 7 home runs and 26 RBI's through 96 games in 2026, and he's still one of the better defensive outfielders in baseball, having won a Gold Glove in center field back in 2024. He's making $10.75 million on a one-year deal and hits free agency this winter, which is the exact profile rental buyers target at the deadline.

Philly's front office isn't hiding the ball on what it needs. Between an outfielder, a fresh arm for the bullpen and another starter, this is a team trying to load up for a real October run rather than tinker at the margins. Adding a proven defender with pop who's available on an expiring deal checks a box without requiring the club to give up a controllable piece long-term.

There's also a weirdly fitting bit of trivia buried in all this. Heyman pointed out that Varsho is actually named after Darren Daulton, the old Phillies great, since Varsho's father Gary briefly played alongside him.

It's the kind of coincidence that writes its own headline if the deal ever gets done, but it doesn't move the needle on whether Toronto actually wants to move him. The Blue Jays would be selling into a division fight of their own, and giving up a Gold Glove center fielder to a team you might see in October is a real cost, not just a scouting exercise.

For now this is squarely in rumor territory, one name among several the Phillies are said to be connected to as the deadline closes in. But it's a real one, and it lines up with everything Philadelphia has been telegraphing about its needs. Worth watching how much traction it gets before things get finalized.
