The context matters here: Skubal is a pure rental. He became the first pitcher to win back-to-back Cy Young Awards since Jacob deGrom, and the first AL pitcher to do it since Pedro Martinez, but Detroit never got him locked up long-term — an offseason arbitration hearing left the sides $13 million apart before an arbitrator sided with Skubal at a $32 million salary for 2026, and the Tigers spent their extension money on Framber Valdez instead.
