Blake Snell Activated By Dodgers, Back For Stretch Run

Blake Snell is off the injured list and back in the Dodgers rotation after a three-month absence caused by loose bodies in his left elbow.

The Dodgers reinstated Blake Snell from the 60-day injured list and slotted him right back into that night's start against the Royals. It's a massive get for a rotation that's been piecing things together all year, and it comes at exactly the right time with October on the horizon.

Snell's 2026 has been a mess through no fault of his own. He was already behind schedule after dealing with shoulder fatigue dating back to last year's postseason, which pushed his season debut back six weeks. Then, almost immediately, an elbow issue popped up. Testing found loose bodies that needed surgical removal, and Snell underwent the same minimally invasive NanoNeedle procedure that teammate Tarik Skubal had gone through just weeks earlier.

The result: one start all season before Tuesday, and an ugly one at that. It doesn't matter much given the sample size, but it's still a reminder of how little the Dodgers have actually seen from their $182 million lefty this year.

That contract is why this activation matters so much. Snell, a two-time Cy Young winner, is locked in through 2029 with an option year in 2030, so this isn't just about salvaging a stretch run — it's about proving the arm that made him worth that money is still there. Manager Dave Roberts has said he wants to bring Snell back gradually rather than rush him, with the priority being a healthy Snell in October over a maxed-out one in August.

The move also reshuffled the pitching staff. Charlie Barnes got optioned to Triple-A Oklahoma City to make room, and Blake Treinen was shifted to the 60-day IL with elbow inflammation of his own. Roberts is now working with a six-man rotation of Snell, Skubal, Yoshinobu Yamamoto, Roki Sasaki, Justin Wrobleski and Eric Lauer — a setup that'll get even more crowded once Tyler Glasnow is ready to return.

For a Dodgers team that's leaned hard on its rotation depth all season, getting a healthy Snell back changes the math for the stretch run. If he can string together even a handful of vintage starts, this staff suddenly looks a lot scarier heading into the postseason.
