Gavin Williams is striking out the entire league right now

Cleveland's rotation hasn't given fans much to scream about this year, but Gavin Williams is single-handedly making every fifth day appointment viewing. In his latest start against the Reds, Williams ran his strikeout total to 12 over 7 innings, a career-high-tying number that capped off a four-start stretch nobody in Guardians uniform has touched since Shane Bieber back in 2021.

That's not a hot streak, that's a historical marker. Since 1900, only 23 other pitchers have ever strung together four consecutive starts with 11-plus strikeouts, and Williams just added his name to a list that includes Sandy Koufax, Randy Johnson and Pedro Martinez. The only guy who's ever done it longer is Chris Sale, who ran his streak to 5 straight back in 2018. Everything else, going back over a century of baseball, tops out at 4.

Here's the cruel part: none of this is translating into wins. Cleveland lost the Reds game 2-0 despite the 12-K masterpiece, managing just 3 hits behind him. Across Williams' last 4 starts the Guardians have scored 0, 1, 1 and 5 runs, good for a 1-3 record in games where their own starter is doing everything humanly possible to keep them in it. Williams himself put it bluntly after the game, saying wins are the thing he actually cares about, not the strikeout totals piling up next to his name.

For fantasy managers and prop bettors, none of that offensive misery matters. Williams is currently punching out batters at a 32% rate per batter faced, top-10 in all of baseball, and his strikeout prop has become close to the safest bet in the sport down the stretch. Whether Cleveland's bats ever wake up is a separate problem. The strikeouts are not slowing down, and the history book keeps getting more crowded with Gavin Williams in it.
