Giants land 2028 MLB All-Star Game at Oracle Park

The word came down Friday: the Giants are officially the hosts of the 2028 All-Star Game, with all the Midsummer Classic trimmings — Home Run Derby included — set to take over Oracle Park.

This isn't new territory for the Bay Area. San Francisco has hosted the All-Star Game 3 times before — 1961 and 1984 at Candlestick Park, then 2007 at Oracle Park itself. 2028 makes it 4, and it'll be the first time the game returns to the current ballpark in over 2 decades.

Commissioner Rob Manfred leaned into the obvious sell, saying the city's "passionate fanbase, world-class ballpark, and rich baseball history" made it an easy call for All-Star Week. Giants president Larry Baer echoed the excitement, saying the organization is "thrilled to welcome the baseball world to San Francisco." Standard league-speak, sure, but Oracle Park genuinely is one of the best settings in the sport for a showcase event — McCovey Cove, the skyline, the whole package.

There's also a scheduling wrinkle that makes the timing make sense: 2028 is an Olympic year, with the Summer Games set for Los Angeles. A San Francisco All-Star Game keeps any MLB players tabbed for Olympic duty a short flight away from L.A. instead of scattered across the country mid-tournament — a logistical assist MLB clearly had in mind while picking the site.

For a Giants franchise that's been chasing relevance in a stacked NL West, landing a marquee national event is a nice consolation prize while the roster figures itself out. It's 2 years away, but expect the countdown talk, ticket speculation, and "who gets the honorary jersey" content to start almost immediately.
