Giants Bullpen Gets Its Closer Back From the Shoulder Abyss

Jason Foley is off the 60-day IL and back with the Giants after a shoulder surgery that wiped out his 2025 season and threatened to derail 2026 too.

San Francisco's bullpen just got a jolt. MLBTradeRumors confirmed Saturday that the Giants have reinstated reliever Jason Foley from the 60-day injured list, ending a rehab odyssey that started with an anterior capsule repair on his throwing shoulder back in May of 2025.

MLBTradeRumors broke the reinstatement news, confirming Foley is officially off the 60-day IL.

For context on why this matters: Foley was the Tigers' closer as recently as 2024, converting 28 saves in 32 chances before Detroit designated him for assignment last November. San Francisco scooped him up on a one-year, $2 million deal in December, fully expecting him to open the year on the shelf while he finished rebuilding a shoulder that hadn't thrown a big-league pitch in over a year.

The road back wasn't smooth. Foley's rehab assignment with Triple-A Sacramento got interrupted at least once, and his underlying numbers down on the farm were rough by his own standard as he worked to get his arm strength and command back in shape after a lost season.

None of that matters now that the transaction is official. Getting a guy with legitimate 9th-inning pedigree back on an active roster is a real add for a Giants bullpen that's had to piece things together in his absence, whether he slots straight into high-leverage work or eases in as a setup piece first.

The obvious question is usage. San Francisco isn't likely to hand him the ball in save situations on day one after a year-plus layoff and a bumpy rehab, but every appearance from here is a step toward reclaiming that role — and a swing factor for anyone rostering Giants relievers in fantasy leagues wondering who's actually closing games down the stretch.
