The numbers are the reason this is happening now and not later. Hill was hitting.353/.420/.529 across 365 plate appearances at Triple-A Sacramento, leading the entire level in batting average and sitting fourth in on-base percentage, according to MLB Trade Rumors. He'd also ripped off a 26-game hit streak and stolen 23 bases in 28 tries. That's not a hot week, that's a full season of forcing the issue.
He's not a finished product, and nobody's pretending otherwise. Scouts peg him as bottom-of-the-scale power with a tendency to beat balls into the ground, per the report — this is a contact-and-legs profile, not a middle-of-the-order bat. At 27, he's older than the typical hot prospect, which makes the jump from Double-A Richmond to Triple-A to the majors in one season even more of a grind-it-out story.
The corresponding move opened the door: Matt Chapman went to the 60-day injured list following core surgery, clearing a spot on the 40-man roster. That's a rough trade in the abstract — losing a All-Star third baseman for the rest of the year — but it's the kind of gap that lets an org find out what it actually has in a guy like Hill.
For now, expect Hill to slot in as a fourth or fifth outfielder, chasing at-bats behind San Francisco's regulars. But an undrafted D-III kid running a.350-plus average through Triple-A is the type of story that writes itself if he keeps hitting big league pitching anywhere close to how he hit everything else in his way this year.
