Lowe, 31, spent parts of 6 seasons in Tampa Bay and Texas, hitting.272 with a 123 wRC+ over that stretch before a rough 2025 sent him to Cincinnati on a minor league deal worth just $1.75 million if he made the roster. He made the roster, and he made it count — a 12-homer,.266/.341/.480 season with a 120 wRC+ that looked a lot more like the guy who used to mash in Texas. Per MLB Trade Rumors, the Reds got back Alejandro Rivera, a 19-year-old international pitching prospect from Venezuela ranked #30 in Cleveland's system, described as a long-term project who's added velocity and a third pitch.

Nathaniel Lowe to Guardians

There's a catch that's worth flagging: Lowe has been brutal against lefties this year, hitting just.083 against left-handed pitching compared to.286 against righties, according to MLB Trade Rumors. That platoon split means he's likely walking into a first base or DH role that gets managed carefully down the stretch rather than an everyday job, but against right-handed starters — which is most of them — he's been a legitimately productive bat.

For a Guardians team looking to add thump without giving up much, this is a low-cost, sensible swing. Cleveland reportedly had a busy deadline overall, also picking up outfielder Jo Adell and lefty starter Foster Griffin from the Angels, so Lowe is one piece of a bigger stretch-run makeover rather than the headline move on its own. Still, adding a hitter with real pop for a fringe prospect is the kind of deadline math that can quietly swing a playoff race.
