Hunter Mahan Talks Tiger Woods Prime, Previews Furyk's Team USA

The 6-time PGA Tour winner turned high school coach sat down with Fore Play to relive playing against Tiger Woods and break down what's coming from Jim Furyk's Team USA.

Hunter Mahan doesn't exactly scream 'high school assistant coach energy.' The guy was ranked as high as No. 4 in the world, made 3 Ryder Cup teams for the U.S., and went 4-1 at the 2011 Presidents Cup. So when he pulled up on Fore Play, the crew couldn't resist pointing out that his current players at a small Texas high school probably have no idea who they're getting instruction from.

That career shift is real, not a bit. Mahan racked up 6 PGA Tour wins between 2007 and 2014 before stepping away from the grind and taking the boys' varsity golf coaching job at Liberty Christian School in Argyle, Texas. It's a genuinely wild pivot for a guy who was once the highest-ranked American golfer alive, but by all accounts he's happy trading tour buses for a high school program.

The real gold, though, is Mahan pulling back the curtain on what it was actually like sharing a fairway with peak Tiger Woods. There's no golfer alive who doesn't have a Tiger story, but Mahan's got the credibility of having actually gone head-to-head with him when Woods was at the absolute peak of his powers and terrifying every other name on tour.

That kind of firsthand account matters because Tiger's aura has become almost mythologized at this point — everyone under 25 knows the highlight reel, but hearing a guy who actually had to tee it up against him describe the intimidation factor is a different animal entirely. Fore Play framed it right: nobody in golf has ever had an aura like peak Tiger, and Mahan lived it.

The conversation also turned to what's ahead for Team USA, with Mahan sharing his read on Jim Furyk. Furyk has been tabbed to captain the U.S. side in Ireland for the 2027 Ryder Cup at Adare Manor, taking the reins after Tiger Woods reportedly withdrew from consideration for the role. Given Mahan's own history in the team room — 3 Ryder Cups and multiple Presidents Cups as both player and veteran voice — his perspective on how Furyk builds and manages that roster carries real weight.

It's a fun full-circle moment for a guy who spent a decade in the top ranks of the sport and is now shaping teenagers instead of chasing majors. Worth a full listen if you want the unfiltered version of what facing Tiger Woods in his prime actually felt like — and where Mahan thinks Team USA is headed under new leadership.
