Jacob Wilson's throw sailed wide of second base in the eighth inning Tuesday night against the Tampa Bay Rays, the kind of play that looked like an obvious error in real time. It was scored that way at first. Then it wasn't.
The play in question: Wilson's errant throw, initially ruled an error before being changed to a fielder's choice.
The official scorer went back and changed the call to a fielder's choice on Yandy Diaz, and just like that, Wilson's streak survived. It now sits at 113 consecutive games without an error at shortstop, still the major-league record for the position.
This one required a save. The A's got blown out 12-4 by the Rays, with Tampa Bay tagging on three runs in that same eighth inning, and for a minute it looked like the historic run might end on a night nobody would remember for much else. Instead the review board bailed him out, and the story became about the streak instead of the score.

Wilson is 24 years old and has now played 231 games at short with just nine career errors, dating back to his last miscue on July 6, 2025. He passed Mike Bordick's old shortstop record of 110 straight errorless games just days earlier, during a win over the Red Sox at Fenway Park.
There's a lineage angle here too. Wilson's dad, Jack Wilson, played shortstop in the majors for 12 years and by his son's own account drilled defense into him before hitting ever entered the picture. Whatever that coaching looked like, it's paying off in a stat line that didn't exist for a shortstop before this summer.
