Golf gives you a thousand ways to get your heart broken, but the par-3 near-ace might be the cruelest. That's exactly what happened to Jake Knapp during Round 1 of the 3M Open at TPC Twin Cities, when his tee shot on the par-3 4th hole from 171 yards tracked the flagstick the entire way, took a bounce, and appeared to be half-swallowed by the cup before somehow spinning its way back out and settling on the lip.

The reaction online was immediate and it wasn't subtle. Golf Twitter has seen plenty of lip-outs, but this one had a different kind of drama because of how long the ball hovered on the edge before staying put. It's the rare shot where a guy walks away with an easy tap-in birdie and still looks like he just lost the lottery.
The disbelief was universal — 'how does that not drop' summed up the entire group's reaction.
Knapp was grouped with Max Homa and Corey Conners off the 10th tee for Round 1, and the near-ace ended up being the signature moment of an otherwise solid day — he carded a 68 to sit tied for 20th at 3-under through the opening round. A hole-in-one would've been the story of his season; instead he gets a highlight reel that's arguably more memorable, for all the wrong reasons.
This is the kind of shot that outlives the tournament itself. Nobody remembers most Round 1 birdies at a regular Tour stop, but a ball that spends a full second teetering on the edge of the cup before staying above ground becomes one of those clips that resurfaces every time golf needs a reminder of how fine the margins really are. Knapp will take the birdie and the highlight — the ace, though, he's going to be thinking about for a while.
