The White Sox just can't catch a break behind the plate. Kyle Teel, the centerpiece return in the Garrett Crochet trade with Boston, is being evaluated for a left ankle injury after leaving Monday's game against the Rangers in Texas, and the timing could not be worse for a rookie who has already spent most of the 2026 season fighting his way back onto the field.

Teel got hurt on a bang-bang play at home plate, spinning on a planted left leg while trying to apply a tag as Ezequiel Duran scored from second on a single. He needed help from the Sox training staff just to get off the field, and the fact that "day-to-day" hasn't been attached to the update is not a great sign. Chicago has already recalled Edgar Quero from Triple-A Charlotte to cover behind the dish, which tells you the club isn't expecting Teel back anytime soon.
This is the third significant injury of Teel's 2026 season. He opened the year sidelined by a Grade 2 right hamstring strain that cost him 4-to-6 weeks, then got shut down again in mid-May with a sprained LCL in his right knee that landed him on the 60-day IL. He'd only just gotten back on track, reinstated in late June after grinding through that knee rehab, and was starting to look like the hitter Boston drafted in the first round back in 2023 before the White Sox scooped him up as the headliner of the Crochet package.
That pedigree is exactly why this stings. Teel was a top White Sox prospect coming into the season and flashed real feel at the plate as a rookie in 2025, slashing .273/.375/.411 with 8 homers in 78 games. He's the kind of building block a rebuilding club needs at the position, and every fresh ankle, knee or hamstring issue chips away at the development runway he's supposed to be getting right now.
For a White Sox team that's been picking through the wreckage of a lost stretch of seasons, losing its top catching prospect to another injury is deflating even if it's not the whole story. The bigger concern is simply health and availability — Teel can't build a track record for a call-up timeline or a long-term role if he's spending more time in the trainer's room than behind the plate.
Imaging and further evaluation should clarify the severity soon, but until then it's a waiting game. If it's serious, expect Quero to get an extended look in Chicago while Teel's 2026 turns into another season defined by rehab rather than results.
