McCullers got activated on July 17 and made exactly 2 appearances for Milwaukee. The first, July 20 against the Mets, was fine on paper, 2 earned runs in 3 innings. The second, on July 25, was a mess: 4 walks and 3 unearned runs in just 1⅔ innings. Two shaky outings and a very short leash later, he was designated for assignment.
The turnaround from acquisition to DFA took less than two weeks, which is what made the news land as hard as it did.
McCullers has been battling injuries and inconsistency for years now, a far cry from the pitcher who anchored Houston's rotation and postseason runs in the late 2010s and early 2020s. The 9-year veteran's remaining salary and injury history make it unlikely another club claims him off waivers outright, and reporting suggests he's more likely to clear and land on a minor league deal somewhere if a team wants to take a flier on him.
For the Brewers, this is a housekeeping move more than a headline one.
