That tease came right after Barstool Gambling flagged Miami as the market mover, with DraftKings odds shifting toward a King's return to South Beach. It made sense on paper — LeBron's flirted with the idea of playing in a warm-weather superteam market before, and Miami's been mentioned in just about every version of this story since the summer started. But less than 24 hours later, Mush pivoted hard.

That's the same Cavaliers franchise LeBron left in 2010 in the most infamous free agency special ever televised, then left again in 2018 after delivering the city its first title in 52 years. A third homecoming at 41 years old, in what would be a 23rd NBA season, is the kind of full-circle stuff that writes its own headlines. It also lines up with what's actually been circulating nationally — Cleveland and Miami have been the two heaviest-mentioned suitors all offseason, with Philadelphia also in the mix, and prediction markets have swung back toward the Cavs as favorites after briefly cooling on them.
Then came the part that actually complicates things. According to Mush, Cleveland had a three-team trade lined up that would've shipped Jarrett Allen to the Jazz in exchange for landing Anthony Davis — presumably to build a roster LeBron would actually want to walk into. That trade reportedly fell apart, at least for now.

That's the tension here: Cleveland reportedly wanted to upgrade the roster before LeBron said yes, the move to do that just fell through, and yet the Cleveland pipeline is apparently still open. It tracks with outside reporting that the Cavs' front office has been cautious about mortgaging future assets for a win-now swing, which is exactly the kind of hesitance that's been floated as a risk to their LeBron pitch in the first place. Meanwhile, LeBron's camp isn't rushing anything — Rich Paul has made clear this decision moves on his client's timeline, not anyone else's.
Not everyone's buying Cleveland, either. Sports Central passed along radio host Mike Mutnansky's take that Miami is still very much live for LeBron, which keeps this from being a done deal in either direction.

LeBron picked up his $52.6 million player option to play the 2025-26 season, which technically makes him a 23-year veteran chasing a season nobody in league history has played before this one hits free agency this summer. Whichever way this goes, the fact that Cleveland keeps surviving every plot twist — including a collapsed trade for Anthony Davis — says the door there is more open than a lot of people expected.
