Phillies land Luis Arraez, move Bryce Harper to right field

BREAKING: The Philadelphia Phillies are acquiring second baseman Luis Arraez in a trade with the San Francisco Giants, sources tell ESPN.

It wasn't a surprise that it happened, but it was a bit of a surprise how it happened. Mark Feinsand had reported the Giants' asking price was steep, and that San Francisco had no real reason to hang onto a pending free agent. Once the number came down, the deal came together quickly: Arraez and reliever Caleb Kilian to Philadelphia, prospects Ramon Marquez and Marty Gair back to San Francisco.

Arraez isn't just a name-brand add. He's a three-time batting champion who came into the trade hitting.324, tops in the National League, with the Giants this season. But adding a table-setter like that to a roster that already had Bryson Stott at second and Alec Bohm at third meant something had to give defensively.

The answer, according to Jon Heyman, is a full shuffle: Stott slides to third, Bohm moves to first, and Bryce Harper — who reportedly said he was willing — heads back to right field for the first time since 2022, when an elbow injury pushed him off the grass. Arraez, notably, had said at the All-Star Game he didn't want to change positions with a new club, but he's sliding right into second base in Philly anyway.
