According to MLB Trade Rumors, the return package heading to Baltimore is three right-handed arms: reliever prospect Alex Hoppe, plus minor leaguers Brock Moore and Harrison Kreiling. It's described as roughly 40-man roster neutral for both sides, since Ward and Hoppe occupy roster spots that Moore and Kreiling don't.
Ward himself is an interesting bet for a contending club. The 32-year-old is a pending free agent hitting.246 with 7 home runs and 30 RBIs in 111 games this season, a real power dip after he hit 98 homers for the Angels over the previous four years, including a career-high 36 in 2025. But the plate discipline has never been better -- he currently leads the American League in walks with 87, and his walk rate has jumped from 11.3% to 17.2% while his strikeout rate has dropped. Seattle is reportedly eating about $3.6 million of his roughly $12.7 million salary.
It's a notably quick turnaround for Ward, who was only in Baltimore because the Orioles had acquired him from the Angels earlier this year. Now he's on his third team of the season, landing with a Mariners club that's clearly looking to add lineup thump and on-base ability before Monday's 6 p.m. deadline hits.
For Seattle, this is about maximizing a roster that's built to win now. An extra bat who gets on base at this clip only helps a lineup trying to set the table for October, even if the power numbers haven't fully translated yet this year.
