Mariners signal full-blown sell mode before deadline

Five days ago the Mariners were reportedly telling teams Kirby, Logan Gilbert, Bryan Woo and Bryce Miller were off the table. Now, with the Aug. 3 deadline bearing down, Jeff Passan is reporting the opposite: multiple teams have engaged Seattle on Kirby, and the Mariners are also fielding calls on Hancock and Castillo.

Multiple teams have engaged the Seattle Mariners on a potential trade for right-hander George Kirby and get the sense he is available and could be moved before the Aug. 3 deadline, sources tell ESPN. Mariners have been listening on starters Emerson Hancock and Luis Castillo, too.

That's a stunning reversal for a 27-year-old righty who's under club control and, on talent alone, looks like a mid-rotation piece any contender would want in October. Kirby's been the guy Seattle built its pitching identity around the last few years, so teams "engaging" on him and Seattle actually entertaining it is the loudest signal yet that this isn't a soft deadline for the M's — it's a real one.

The why here isn't complicated. Seattle sat in first place in the AL West at 47-44 on July 6, then went 6-14 over the next stretch and fell three games out of both the division and the final wild card spot. A team that was buying-adjacent three weeks ago is now reportedly sitting at 53-58 and listening on basically everyone with value, which is how you end up with a face-of-the-rotation arm on the table.

Randy Arozarena adds another layer. He's a pending free agent having a legitimate All-Star year, reportedly slashing around.280/.375/.447 with 20 steals, and he's only owed roughly $5.16 million of his salary the rest of the way — a number that puts him in reach for basically any contender, big-market or not. If Seattle's willing to move a rental bat that good, it's not posturing. It's a sell.

None of this guarantees Kirby actually gets moved by Monday's 6 p.m. ET cutoff — engagement isn't a done deal, and Seattle could easily keep him and just flip the rental pieces like Arozarena and Castillo. But the shift from "not available" to "multiple teams engaged" in less than a week says everything about how quickly a 6-14 stretch can change a front office's plans.
