The maddening part is how good the timing looked before this. Rajcic spent years developing as a starter in the Cardinals system, then got shifted to the bullpen this season and immediately took off, posting a 2.88 ERA across 40 2/3 innings for Memphis. That's the kind of breakout that gets a guy a real shot — and it did. He got the call, made his debut, and was building something before his elbow shut it all down.

Tommy John recoveries typically run 14 months or more, which means Rajcic is likely looking at missing the rest of this season and most, if not all, of 2027. He's only 24, so the silver lining is that a return in 2028 would still land him right in his prime pitching years. But for a guy who just tasted the majors for the first time, watching a season and a half evaporate is brutal.

It's also a reminder of how thin the margin is for relief conversions like Rajcic's. Moving to the bullpen can unlock stuff that plays up in shorter bursts — better velocity, sharper secondary pitches — but it also means max-effort outings back-to-back, which is exactly the kind of workload that chews up elbows. Rajcic's transformation from up-and-down starter to legitimate bullpen weapon was one of the better under-the-radar stories in the Cardinals system this year, and now it's on pause.

For St. Louis, this is one more arm off the depth chart in a farm system that was counting on cheap, controllable bullpen help. For Rajcic, it's a long road of rehab starts and doctor's appointments before he gets another shot at the level he just reached.
