Mets sign reliever Chris Devenski to minor league deal

The Mets went into the trade deadline with one of the deeper bullpens in baseball and came out the other side with almost none of it. Brooks Raley went to Philadelphia, A.J. Minter to Minnesota, and both Luke Weaver and Huascar Brazoban got flipped for prospects, leaving closer Devin Williams as basically the last proven arm left in the pen. That's the context for a low-key move like signing Devenski off the scrap heap.

Devenski isn't walking into a high-leverage role. He was just outrighted by the Pirates after electing free agency, and he's headed to Triple-A Syracuse rather than straight to Queens. This is depth-chart insurance, not a bullpen fix.

There was a time Devenski was genuinely nasty. Through 2017 with the Astros, he threw 189 innings with a 2.38 ERA and a 28.2% strikeout rate, the kind of numbers that made him a trusted piece of a championship-caliber Houston bullpen. That version of Devenski is a long way off now.

Since 2022 he's bounced through six organizations — the Diamondbacks, Phillies, Angels, Rays, Mets and Pirates — with a 5.35 ERA over that stretch. His most recent stop in Pittsburgh ended with an undisclosed illness that cost him roughly 3 months on the injured list before the Pirates outrighted him.

None of that makes this a marquee addition, but it's an easy, no-risk flier for a team that just admitted its current relief corps has nobody with even 4 years of big league service time. If Devenski shows anything in Syracuse, New York has a phone number to call the next time an arm goes down.
