Sucker Punch Sparks Mass Brawl in Mexican Baseball League

A rundown out turned into a bloody brawl after Danry Vasquez sucker-punched a Monclova infielder, and it's the ugliest scene baseball's seen in a while.

Baseball brawls are usually a lot of pushing, some jersey-grabbing, and a bunch of guys in bullpen jackets sprinting in from 400 feet away to do absolutely nothing. This one was different. In a Liga Mexicana de Beisbol game between Tijuana and Monclova, a routine rundown play in the 4th inning turned into a genuine fight, and the footage is spreading everywhere.

The clip shows the collision at home plate along the third-base line before both benches empty into a scrum near the mound.

The trigger, per reporting on the incident, was Tijuana baserunner Danry Vasquez getting tagged out during the rundown. Instead of jogging back to the dugout, Vasquez turned and hit Monclova third baseman Rodolfo Amador with a right hand that dropped him, then kept going after him on the ground. That's when both teams poured onto the field.

The fallout was worse than your average scrum. Vasquez and Toros pitcher Adonis Medina were both ejected, along with Monclova's Ryan Hernandez and Jecksson Flores. Hernandez, who reportedly clotheslined Vasquez during the chaos, ended up hospitalized with a broken arm. The LMB responded by suspending Vasquez indefinitely.

It's not exactly a surprise this got that ugly. Vasquez was once a Houston Astros minor leaguer before the organization released him back in 2016, after he was arrested for hitting his then-girlfriend inside a stairwell at a minor league stadium in Texas. A guy with that on his record throwing an unprovoked haymaker on a baseball field isn't a one-off — it's a pattern, and now the LMB has to decide how long he sits.

For a sport that prides itself on unwritten rules and mostly harmless dugout-clearing theater, this one crossed a real line — a guy got seriously hurt over an out call in the middle innings of a regular-season game. Expect the LMB's discipline process, and any appeal from Vasquez, to be the next thing worth watching here.
