Nashville Kats win AF1 title on wild goal-line stand

Arena football doesn't get more chaotic than this. The Nashville Kats and Albany Firebirds turned the Arena Crown championship game into a track meet, trading touchdowns until the score sat at 53-53 with the clock bleeding out. Then Kulka found receiver Malik Honeycutt for a 25-yard touchdown to put Nashville up 59-53 with under a minute left, setting up one final, frantic possession for Albany.

The Firebirds weren't done. They drove all the way down to Nashville's one-yard line with 3 seconds on the clock, needing just one more play to force overtime or steal the whole thing. Instead, the Kats' defense held the line and the clock hit zero with Albany still short, sealing a 59-53 win at F&M Bank Arena in Clarksville. For a franchise that only moved to Clarksville from Nashville in 2025, winning the first championship in the new building on a play like that is about as good as it gets. It also caps a run that saw the Kats reel off 11 straight wins heading into the title game, with Kulka playing every bit the part of the guy who'd been here before — he led Nashville to last year's championship game too, and this year he backed it up with the actual trophy.

He bounced from Lawrence Tech to Japan's X-League playing for the Obic Seagulls before landing back stateside with the Kats, and he's turned into one of AF1's most productive passers in the process — the kind of arc that makes a moment like this hit different for the guys who lived it.

Arena football rarely makes it outside its own bubble, but a championship decided by a goal-line stand as time expires is the kind of clip that travels regardless of the league logo attached to it. For Nashville, it's a first title in its new home. For Albany, it's a gut punch that will replay in Clarksville highlight reels for a long time.
