Texas placed Nathan Eovaldi on the 15-day injured list, retroactive to August 9, with right posterior elbow inflammation. It's the kind of move that lands like a gut punch in a rotation that was already banking on him down the stretch.
There wasn't an obvious red flag in his last outing. Eovaldi went 5 1/3 innings Friday, but his fastball sat around 92.9 mph, down from 93.6 in his previous start. That dip apparently masked something building in the elbow, whether it flared up mid-start or in a bullpen session between outings.
This is Eovaldi's second trip to the IL in as many years with a similar transaction attached to it, and it comes at the worst possible time. The 36-year-old signed a 3-year, $75 million deal with Texas that runs through 2027, and he's been a workhorse for this club all season, logging 132 2/3 innings with a 4.21 ERA before the injury hit.
The bigger problem is the standings. Texas sits at 59-59, holding the final AL wild card spot by the slimmest of margins, half a game back of the Astros in the division and just a game clear of the Tigers chasing that same wild card berth. Losing a rotation piece now isn't a hypothetical fantasy-points issue, it's a real threat to October.
With Eovaldi out, the Rangers are reportedly looking at Jordan Montgomery and Cal Quantrill, both currently in the bullpen, as candidates to slide into the rotation until he or fellow injured starter Jack Leiter can return. Neither is a like-for-like replacement for a guy who's been logging innings all year, and Texas doesn't have much margin for a shaky next few weeks.
For fantasy managers and bettors alike, Eovaldi's elbow issue immediately reshuffles the board, both for his own IL timeline and for whoever inherits his turns in the rotation. The Rangers will need to navigate a wild card scrum without their most reliable arm, and how they patch the rotation over the next couple weeks could decide whether this season ends in October or in mid-September.
