San Diego doesn't always spend its splashiest money on Day 1 of the draft. Sometimes the smartest move is quietly locking up an 11th-round college bat before he can change his mind about turning pro. That's exactly what happened with Chris McHugh, the NC State first baseman the Padres popped with the 335th overall pick and now have signed, ink dry, for $170,000.

That $170,000 figure matters more than it looks. Rounds 11 through 20 carry a $150,000 slot that doesn't touch a team's bonus pool at all, so the Padres are only eating $20,000 against the pool to get McHugh signed. It's an efficient way to add value without cannibalizing money earmarked for higher picks.
The player himself is the pitch. McHugh hit .320/.409/.525 with 9 home runs this spring at NC State, a right-handed bat with a track record of making hard, consistent contact rather than just hunting for exit velocity. He was a sophomore standout for the Wolfpack too, leading the team in hits, RBI and on-base percentage the year before and picking up Second Team All-ACC honors along the way. Signing him also means he's forgoing his senior season to turn pro immediately.
For a Padres farm system that's leaned heavily on power arms and toolsy outfielders in recent draft classes, a polished college first baseman is a different kind of building block. It won't get the attention of a first-round pick, but contact-oriented bats like this are the ones that quietly climb org rankings a level a year, and $170,000 is a cheap price to find out if this one does.
