The Rangers made a corresponding move Tuesday that says a lot about where this roster is right now: outfielder Jarred Kelenic is back up from Triple-A Round Rock, and infielder Jonah Bride is out, designated for assignment to make room.
This is Kelenic's third trip to the majors this season, and by far his most earned. He started the year on a minor league deal with the White Sox, got DFA'd and hit free agency, caught on with Texas for a 10-day cup of coffee in June, then got sent back down. Since that demotion, he's been an absolute problem in Round Rock, slashing.391/.456/.674 across 24 games with 103 plate appearances and going a perfect 7-for-7 on stolen base attempts. That's not a guy you keep in the minors much longer.
Bride's exit stings a little because of the timing. He'd only just been added to the roster two days earlier, when Texas optioned outfielder Alejandro Osuna to clear a spot for him. The Rangers simply didn't have a real bench outfielder behind their trio of Brandon Nimmo, Evan Carter and Wyatt Langford, and Kelenic's Triple-A numbers made the swap an easy call, even at Bride's expense.
None of this is happening in a vacuum. Texas sits right in the thick of one of the tightest wild card scrambles in recent memory, with seven American League teams bunched within 3.5 games of each other. Every roster tweak matters when the margin for error is that thin, and a fresh, red-hot bat off the bench is exactly the kind of low-cost swing-for-value move a bubble team makes in August.
For Bride, it's now about waiting to see if another club claims him off waivers or if he clears and heads back to the minors. For Kelenic, it's another shot to prove the White Sox stint and June audition were just the warm-up — and that the version of him tearing up Round Rock pitching is the one that sticks in the big leagues this time.
