The Rays are once again doing the thing they always do at the deadline: buying low on a name pitcher and daring their staff to fix him. Word broke Sunday afternoon that Tampa Bay is acquiring right-hander Freddy Peralta from the Mets, with ESPN's Jeff Passan and MLB Network's Mark Feinsand and Ken Rosenthal all confirming the deal within minutes of each other.

On paper this looks like exactly the kind of pitcher Tampa Bay loves to poach. Peralta is a two-time All-Star who led the National League in wins in 2025, going 17-6 with a career-low 2.70 ERA for Milwaukee. Then the Brewers flipped him to the Mets over the winter, and 2026 has been a disaster by comparison — a 4.99 ERA through 22 starts, a far cry from the guy who was one of the best pitchers in baseball a year ago. That's the profile Tampa Bay has built a reputation chasing: talent that got expensive to keep or simply hasn't clicked with its current club, available for a discount because the surface numbers scared everyone else off.
The price wasn't cheap in prospect terms, even if it's light on payroll. Per Feinsand, the Rays are sending outfielder Aidan Smith, second baseman Emilien Pitre and right-hander Gary Gill Hill to the Mets to close the deal.

Feinsand followed up with where those names rank in the Rays' system — Smith checks in as Tampa Bay's No. 15 prospect, Pitre at No. 27, and Gill Hill at No. 26, all according to MLB Pipeline. That's a real chunk of a farm system that's been the backbone of how the Rays operate, but it's the going rate for a former 17-game winner making just $8 million this year with an expiring deal.

Now Peralta slots into a rotation that already had Drew Rasmussen, Shane McClanahan and Nick Martinez, arguably giving Tampa Bay one of the deepest starting staffs left in the American League. The Rays don't need Peralta to be the 2025 version overnight — they need him to be competent innings behind a group that's already shown it can carry a roster deep into October. Whether their pitching lab can squeeze the 2025 form back out of him is the whole bet, and it's the same bet that's made Tampa Bay's front office must-watch every summer.
