For three weeks, the Red Sox couldn't lose. Now they have, and the streak that turned a lost season into a bandwagon is officially over at 15.
All great things must come to an end. The win streak dies at 15. It was a spectacular run. More importantly though a lost season is 100% back on. The rest of the summer should be fun. Context matters here. This run started right after a 10-2 loss to Washington on July 1, when Boston sat at 37-48 and dead last in the AL East. From there the Red Sox reeled off 15 straight, the longest streak in the majors since the Cardinals also won 15 in a row back in September of 2021. It was, by any measure, one of the stranger turnarounds in recent franchise history.

That 1946 comparison isn't a throwaway stat. That Ted Williams-led Red Sox team ran off 15 straight on its way to the American League pennant, and it stood alone atop the franchise record book for 80 years until this group tied it. Boston needed a sweep of the doubleheader to actually break the record outright. They didn't get it — the Orioles took the nightcap and ended the run right there at Fenway.
Mush wasn't exactly shocked. He'd been the voice of caution the whole way through, telling fans not to get too attached to a group even some of Boston's own fans have called the most unlikable roster in franchise history.

Whether he's right is the whole story from here. A team that was last in its division three weeks ago is now a legitimate factor in the AL East and wild card picture, chasing a Yankees club still 4 games up the road. Portnoy's already declared the lost season un-lost and the rest of the summer fair game — streak or no streak, Boston's back in it, and that's a very different problem to have than the one they had on July 1.
