Bobby Baseball hits the IL, Royals' season hangs in the balance

The Royals placed Bobby Witt Jr. on the 10-day injured list this week with lower back tightness, retroactive to Tuesday, per MLBTradeRumors. Witt exited Monday's win over the Giants with back spasms after taking a hit-by-pitch, and the Royals didn't wait long to make it official. To fill the gap on the 40-man roster, Kansas City called up infielder Andrew Velazquez from Triple-A Omaha and shipped righty Stephen Kolek from the 15-day IL to the 60-day IL. It's a corner of the roster fans haven't had to think about all year, because Witt simply doesn't miss games.

That's what makes this sting. Witt signed an 11-year, $288.8M extension back in February 2024 that runs through at least 2034, and he's been every bit the franchise cornerstone that deal promised. The good news, at least for now, is that the Royals aren't publicly treating this as a long-term concern. Back spasms are scary, but if Witt responds well to a week and a half of rest, he's eligible to return as early as July 31. Still, any absence for a guy who's the engine of that lineup instantly reshapes the fantasy landscape and the prop-betting board for every Royals game he sits.

The bigger question is what this means for a Kansas City team that was already on shaky footing. Losing Witt for even 10 days, right as the trade deadline approaches, only adds fuel to chatter that this Royals season is trending toward seller mode instead of contender mode. Bobby Baseball being out of the lineup is the kind of thing that changes a franchise's entire deadline calculus in a hurry.
