Orioles move Sig Mejdal off analytics into new role

TLDR: Baltimore is pulling the architect of its analytics department out of that seat and handing him a new job overseeing emerging technologies.
The Orioles front office is getting reshuffled again, and this time it's the guy who built the analytics department from scratch. Sig Mejdal, the assistant GM who's overseen Baltimore's numbers side since 2018, is stepping away from that oversight role, according to Britt Ghiroli, with Andy Kostka confirming through his own source.
Mejdal isn't leaving the building. He's sliding into a role overseeing emerging technologies and innovative practices for the front office, per Kostka's reporting — a shift in lane, not an exit. It's the kind of move that reads differently depending on who's asking: a lateral pivot to something Mejdal's uniquely built for, or a signal that the analytics department he ran is heading in a new direction under someone else.
Context matters here. Mejdal isn't some recent hire getting shuffled off a project — he's one of the more well-traveled analytics minds in the sport. A former NASA engineer, he got his start in baseball with the Cardinals in 2005, then built the Astros' analytics department from the ground up starting in 2012, a stretch that coincided with Houston ripping off a 50-plus win improvement between 2013 and 2017 and out-drafting every other team in the league. When Mike Elias left Houston to become Baltimore's GM in November 2018, he brought Mejdal with him to run the Orioles' analytics shop as assistant GM.
That's nearly 8 years of Mejdal being the face of the numbers department that helped turn a moribund Orioles franchise into a legitimate contender. Stepping out of that chair — even into a role built around new technology and innovation — is a real change in what he does day to day inside the building.
The Orioles haven't confirmed any of this publicly, and it's still unclear who inherits oversight of the analytics department Mejdal is leaving behind. Mejdal keeps his assistant GM title either way, so this reads more like an internal reassignment than a demotion — but a front office shake-up involving the guy who literally built the department is worth watching, especially with how much noise Baltimore's front office has made all season.
