Tigers cut bait on Jake Rogers as roster crunch hits

The Tigers made it official on July 28: Jake Rogers is off the 26-man roster. MLB Trade Rumors broke the news, and it's the kind of transaction that looks small on a wire but says a lot about where this Detroit roster is headed as the trade deadline closes in.

Rogers has been around Comerica Park since his 2019 debut, and he was Detroit's primary catcher through 2023-24 before Dillon Dingler took over the bulk of the workload. He even had a 21-homer season back in 2023 that made him look like a long-term answer behind the plate. But the bat never stabilized after that — he hit under.200 in every season from 2024 through 2026, and this year he was down to a.161 average with 3 home runs and 9 RBIs across 110 plate appearances. Across that entire 2024-26 stretch, he was slashing a brutal.188/.262/.338.

The timing isn't a coincidence. Javier Báez, back from the injured list, needed a roster spot, and Rogers' bat made him the easiest guy to move. Detroit is turning backup catching duties over to Eduardo Valencia in the meantime, which tells you this wasn't a hard call for the front office.

A DFA doesn't mean it's over — the Tigers now have to trade, release, or outright Rogers within the standard waiver window, and other clubs will get a look at whether a defense-and-framing veteran with some pop left in the tank is worth a flier. For a Tigers team trying to sort out who sticks around for a playoff push, though, it's another sign nobody's roster spot is safe right now.
