Detroit's roster shuffle got real on Tuesday. MLB Trade Rumors confirmed the Tigers designated catcher Jake Rogers for assignment, a move that closes the book on one of the longer tenures on the current roster. Rogers debuted with Detroit back in 2019 and had been a fixture behind the plate through some genuinely lean Tigers years, so this one carries some weight even if the roster logic behind it is pretty straightforward.

The corresponding move: Javier Baez is coming off the injured list, and Detroit needed a 40-man spot to make it happen. Eduardo Valencia was already called up to cover for Darren Carpenter's IL stint, and that chain of transactions left Rogers as the odd man out. It's the classic July squeeze — not personal, just numbers, except somebody's career takes the hit.
The on-field case for cutting Rogers loose was building for a while. He's hit just.188/.262/.338 across his last three seasons in Detroit, and this year specifically he was down to a.161 average with 3 homers and a.567 OPS through 36 appearances. Once considered a strong defensive catcher, his framing and blocking numbers slipped too this season, even with a solid 26.7% caught-stealing rate still intact. He'd already lost the primary catching job to breakout backstop Dillon Dingler after carrying the load in 2023 and 2024.
There's a financial wrinkle here too. Rogers is owed roughly $984,000 of his $3.05 million salary for the rest of the year, and if Detroit can move him in a trade rather than eating the money, it trims a bit off their luxury tax number — not nothing for a club that's been mindful of that threshold. Now it's a waiting game: does he clear waivers, get claimed, or get flipped in a trade before the deadline? Several teams looking for catching depth, including the Yankees, Rays, Red Sox, Rangers and White Sox, have been floated as potential landing spots.
For Detroit, this is one more domino in what's shaping up to be an active week before the trade deadline. Losing Rogers stings a little given how long he's been part of the furniture in that clubhouse, but with Dingler entrenched and Valencia getting a real look, the Tigers clearly see their catching future elsewhere. Whether Rogers gets a fresh start somewhere else — or lands right back in Detroit's system — should shake out soon.
