Tigers' collapse turns Skubal trade buzz into a countdown

For a few innings on Wednesday, it felt like a farewell tour. Tarik Skubal was dealing in front of a Detroit crowd that has spent all week bracing for the possibility that this is it -- his last run in a Tigers uniform before the August 3 trade deadline. He got the moment he deserved when he punched out his 1,000th career strikeout and the whole ballpark stood up for him.

None of this is coming out of nowhere. Skubal is a 2-time AL Cy Young winner heading into free agency after this season, and Detroit and his camp have been at odds over money -- the two sides reportedly sat on a record $13 million gap in arbitration earlier this year, with Skubal seeking $32 million and the Tigers countering at $19 million. An extension was never realistic, which means the Tigers have been staring down a brutal choice all summer: trade the best pitcher in baseball for a monster prospect package now, or risk watching him walk for nothing next winter.

Wednesday's game made the decision look a lot easier. Detroit rolled out to a 7-1 lead behind Skubal, who left in the 7th still up 6, only to watch the bullpen and lineup let it slip away completely. The Orioles clawed all the way back and won 10-9 in 12 innings, dropping the Tigers to 51-58 and 4 games out of a wild card spot.

LA has publicly downplayed its interest, but rival executives keep pointing to the same logic: a club chasing a 3rd straight World Series doesn't pass on the best arm available. With the deadline now just days away and Detroit's playoff math getting uglier by the loss, the next few days will decide whether Skubal finishes 2026 in the Motor City or somewhere entirely new.
