Trey Yesavage's knee injury puts Blue Jays rotation in limbo

Trey Yesavage was supposed to be the guy who made the Blue Jays' rotation scary down the stretch. Instead, the 23-year-old right-hander is stuck in a waiting room, hoping a specialist doesn't tell him he needs a scalpel.

The injury popped up out of nowhere for a guy who's been one of the best stories in baseball. Yesavage was Toronto's 20th overall pick in 2024, started 2025 in A-ball, and somehow ended that same season pitching in the World Series against the Dodgers. This year he opened on the injured list with a shoulder impingement, came back, and turned into a legitimate AL Rookie of the Year candidate — 5-5, a 3.65 ERA, and 91 strikeouts in 93 2/3 innings, walk issues and all.

Then came Tuesday in Houston. Yesavage had to be pulled from his start against the Astros and landed on the 15-day IL the next day with left knee inflammation. An MRI turned up meniscus damage, and according to MLB Trade Rumors, he was set to visit a specialist Monday to figure out what's next.

Blue Jays manager John Schneider hasn't sugarcoated it — surgery is reportedly on the table, and even if Yesavage avoids the knife, he's likely looking at several weeks on the shelf either way. For a Toronto team that's been counting on him as a rotation piece down the stretch, that's a gut punch at a bad time.

The Monday visit to the specialist is the whole ballgame here. It'll decide whether Yesavage is back for a meaningful chunk of the season or whether his breakout rookie campaign gets cut short by a torn meniscus nobody saw coming. Until then, both fantasy managers and the Blue Jays are just stuck waiting on the phone call.
