Guardians overtake White Sox for AL Central lead as wild card jams up

The Guardians spent Tuesday night and Wednesday reminding everyone why the AL Central race isn't over just because the White Sox had been sitting on top of it since July. Cleveland took two of three from Chicago this week, and by Wednesday night they had full, sole possession of first place for the first time since July 3.

Cleveland Guardians have taken over sole possession of first place in the AL Central for the first time since July 3rd! White Sox had been in first place that entire time and are now just 1.5 games above the Rangers for the final Wild Card spot. Texas holds the tiebreaker
Tuesday's game had it all. Jo Adell and Travis Bazzana each hit first-inning home runs to stake Cleveland to an early lead, only for the White Sox to claw all the way back and take a 6-5 edge into the late innings after a bizarre sequence where a pickoff throw from Davis Martin bounced off the first-base umpire and let a run score.

The Guardians score a run after Davis Martin's throw to first hit the umpire. 😬
Cleveland didn't fold. With two outs in the ninth and down to their final strike, Brayan Rocchio delivered a two-run double that just eluded a diving outfielder in left, capping a 7-6 comeback win and marking his league-best fourth walk-off hit of the season. It came on Noche Latina at Progressive Field, with Rocchio having held the Venezuelan flag during pregame ceremonies.

GUARDIANS WALK OFF THE WHITE SOX Cleveland is now just half a game back of the White Sox in the AL Central
Wednesday brought more of the same push. Tommy Pham had briefly put the White Sox back in front with a three-run homer in the 5th, but Petey Halpin answered with a go-ahead three-run shot of his own in the 6th that held up as the difference in a 6-3 Cleveland win. Parker Messick struck out 8 over 6 innings for the win, and Cade Smith closed it out for his 37th save.
That two-day swing put the Guardians at 78-75 and the White Sox at 77-75, a half-game gap that's now enough for Cleveland to hold sole possession of the division for the first time in over two months as they chase a third straight AL Central title. Chicago doesn't just fall to second, either — that result also drops the White Sox into the Wild Card picture, where the margins are just as thin.
That's where things get genuinely messy. Toronto beat Detroit 5-1 the same day to pull to 1.5 games back of the White Sox for the last Wild Card spot and now sit tied with Texas, who hold the tiebreaker. It's close enough that Rangers reporter Evan Grant mapped out a scenario where the Rangers, Astros, Guardians and White Sox could all finish level in a standings knot spanning the AL West, AL Central and the final Wild Card spot.
With Cleveland set to close the regular season against the Athletics, Red Sox and Royals while Chicago finishes with the Tigers, Royals and Rockies, neither the division nor the Wild Card picture is settling down anytime soon. Every game from here reads like a playoff elimination scenario for somebody.
