Internet Invitational 2025 Episode 4: The Decision Of A Lifetime

By JR·2 min read

TLDR: Frankie Borrelli's team won the Day 2 afternoon 5-1 to come back from 4-2 down and go through 7-5, and Bubbie Broders turned down $250,000 to play one more hole that would have flipped the deciding match. Riggs's 12, George Bryan and The Jet among them, went home.

The episode opens on the argument the morning left behind, whether The Jet and George Bryan should have taken the $100,000. “10 times out of 10 I'm taking it.” “Well then you're a little selfish there.” Somebody predicted Portnoy would be offering $2 million over a chip before the week was out.

Borrelli's team was 4-2 down with 6 alternate-shot matches to play. It needed 4 to force a 4-on-4 overtime and 5 to win outright; Riggs's team needed 2½.

Dalke was 2 up through 2 and he and Snell beat Berkshire and Gabby Golf Girl 4 & 3, the first match done. Ellis hit a 5-iron 230 yards into the wind, “the purest five iron you'll ever hit,” and he and Borrelli demolished Riggs and Austen. Riggs defended himself on the way round as “the only undefeated captain.”

King and Morris beat Hallow and The Duke, who rapped about his boxers. Spiranac and Finch beat George Bryan and The Jet, George going out on a 40-yard pull hook off the rocks. Roger Steele and Lantz won every hole and every skin against Franke and Richards, who putted through his legs, for Riggs's team's only point.

The deciding match had its own subplot. A cameraman picked up Malosi Togisala's ball in the hazard to check it was a Callaway and wiped the mud off it; after an appeal, the ruling was a penalty drop. Portnoy offered Togisala $10,000 to hit it off the rocks into the fairway, and he didn't make it. The same cameraman later drove a cart through a wooden fence.

Togisala and Broders were 2 up on Bowker and Winter, who squared it when Winter's 9-iron nearly went in. On the last hole Togisala and Broders won it: 5-1 on the afternoon and 7-5 on the day, “the greatest comeback.”

Portnoy offered Broders $250,000 to play one more hole: lose it, and the match flipped, the teams tied and it went to overtime.

“It's a team game. I ain't doing that to my team.”

Broders said the win felt damn near as good as the money. Riggs took the blame for his pairings and for wasting George Bryan, and his 12 went home. Borrelli's 12 had about an hour before half of them stopped being teammates.
