For months this has been the dream scenario for Commanders fans: Brandon Aiyuk, disgruntled and stuck on the 49ers' reserve/left squad list, finally gets sprung loose and reunites with his old Arizona State quarterback Jayden Daniels in Washington. Aiyuk himself has fueled it, publicly saying he'd sign with the Commanders 'tomorrow' if San Francisco just let him go. It's been a running soap opera all summer.
Except now the guy who covers this stuff for ESPN is throwing cold water on it. Jordan Fowler said flatly that he doesn't think the Commanders are going to bring Aiyuk in, at least 'at this stage.'

That's a real gut check for anyone who had this penciled in as a done deal. The holdup was never really about desire, it was about mechanics. Aiyuk is still under contract in San Francisco, sitting on the left squad list, which means the Commanders can't just call his agent and get a deal done. San Francisco would have to release or trade him first, and GM John Lynch has already said Aiyuk has likely played his last snap for the Niners, yet the team has held onto him all offseason looking for compensation instead of just cutting him loose.
Money is part of why San Francisco hasn't budged. Aiyuk is playing on a 4-year, $120 million extension, and the Niners voided roughly $27 million of his 2026 guarantees after he blew off team activities. Cutting him now would still mean over $13 million in dead cap this year alone, so there's zero urgency on their end to make this easy for Washington or anyone else.
On the Commanders' side, the hesitation reportedly has less to do with talent and more to do with headaches. Aiyuk's social media antics and the drawn-out public campaign for a trade haven't exactly screamed 'low-maintenance addition' for a team trying to keep things buttoned up around Daniels heading into a pivotal third season. Add in that Washington already has a receiver room and the calculus starts to make sense even without a Fowler report attached.
None of that kills the idea for good. NFL front offices change their minds constantly, especially once camp battles expose real needs, and Aiyuk clearly hasn't stopped lobbying. But for now the fantasy football buzz around a Daniels-Aiyuk pairing needs to cool off, because according to the people actually covering it, Washington isn't currently in on him.
