Syracuse down 2 QBs, Steve Angeli questionable vs. UNC

TLDR: Syracuse has ruled out quarterbacks Malachi Nelson and Amari Odom for Saturday at North Carolina, and starter Steve Angeli is questionable, so the Orange could be down to their 4th-string QB.

The ACC availability report came out Tuesday night, and Syracuse's quarterback room looks like a MASH unit.

Look at who's on that list. Angeli is the starter. Before he missed the Louisville game he had thrown for 730 yards with 4 touchdowns and 5 interceptions. Odom was the backup and missed Louisville too. Nelson, the 3rd-stringer, has a leg injury and now he's out as well. If Angeli can't go, all 3 of the top guys on the depth chart are watching from the sideline.

The worst news is about Odom. It's not just this week.

Syracuse QBs Malachi Nelson and Amari Odom are both out this week, while Steve Angeli is questionable against North Carolina. Sources have told @On3 that Odom is working through an injury that will sideline him for the foreseeable future. t.co/a9CDaYji3W

On3's sources say Odom's injury will keep him out for the foreseeable future. The ACC report lists it as a shoulder. That means one of Syracuse's backups is gone for a while, not for a week, and the depth problem doesn't end Saturday even if Angeli gets healthy.

If none of the 3 can play, it's probably junior Danny Lauter. In limited action this season he's 5-of-11 for 74 yards and a touchdown. That's a small sample, and now he might get his 1st real start on the road in an ACC night game.

Kickoff is 7:30 p.m. Saturday at Kenan Stadium on ACC Network. North Carolina is 4-2 overall and 2-1 in the ACC, so they have every reason to go after a quarterback who has barely played. Watch for word on Angeli as the week goes on. If he's upgraded, Syracuse has a game. If he's downgraded, it's Lauter's offense and Orange fans should be very nervous.
