Big Cat's UTSA flip covers vs. South Florida at the buzzer

With under 2 minutes left Thursday night, UTSA trailed South Florida 24-23. A spread ticket at -6.5 looked finished. Then this happened.

The Bulls had gone ahead with 1:56 left on a Michael Van Buren Jr. touchdown pass to D.J. Crowther. UTSA answered by driving the field, and Will Henderson III broke a 26-yard run with 18 seconds left to set up first-and-goal. Peterson ran it in on the next play, his 3rd touchdown of the night. The final was 31-24. That's a 7-point win against a 6.5-point number, so the cover came by half a point on the game's last real snap.

The flip is what makes it great. Big Cat came over to the Roadrunners and laying the points, which needed a lot to go right on a night when UTSA trailed late. He wasn't about to take a victory lap, either. Barely 5 minutes after the score, he posted this.

That's the right energy. He knows he got lucky. Anyone holding USF +6.5 watched a game they had won outright for most of the 4th quarter turn into a loss in the final seconds, and that's about as cruel as a midweek MAC-style slugfest gets in the American. Every Pick Em season has 1 or 2 of these, and you take the ones that fall your way.

For the record, UTSA is the real deal so far. The win moves the Roadrunners to 5-1 and 2-0 in the American, with Peterson and Henderson combining for 178 rushing yards on 25 carries and Owen McCown going 22-for-31 for 209 yards. South Florida drops to 4-2 and 1-2 in league play.

Next up, UTSA hosts Navy on October 17, and South Florida hosts Kent State the same day. Whether Big Cat rides the Roadrunners again or flips back the other way, he's already banked 1 cover he admits he didn't earn.
